Our Philosophy

New Discovery provides a warm and secure setting in which young children can flourish with the loving care of dedicated teachers. Socialization is an important part of the New Discovery program. There is an emphasis upon sharing, caring, cooperation, manners, and respect for others. Children follow a daily routine that includes time for free play and for theme based activities fostering learning and skills development. Physical education is incorporated through musical movement indoors, outdoor play on the school playground, and Fitness and Movement sessions with Creative World Learning of New York. The following pages offer a description of the curriculum and daily routine for the different age groups.

Our Staff

Our Executive Director/Owner has been with New Discovery since 1983 and is on site daily, along with the Business and Education Directors, to ensure the well being and safety of each child in the program. Teachers hired since 1988 have received the National Credential of Child Development Associate Degree (CDA), a New York State Teaching Degree or a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. We are proud of the low staff turnover and many staff members have ten years or more years of employment at New Discovery. Our staff has a reputation for their combination of educational skills, practical experience, and a warm, caring devotion to each child’s growth and development. Staff members work cooperatively to share new ideas as well as tried and true practices for guiding children and parents through the early childhood years.

Staff Education

Thoughtfully planned training with certified early childhood specialists in the areas of development, nutrition, health, safety, security, business, and state regulations insures that everyone on our team receives relevant continuing education.

All classroom staff receive a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years, including required training in First Aid, CPR, and, (effective January 2005) MAT -- Medication Administration Training. New teachers receive mentoring from an experienced teacher for their first year in the classroom.

Staff Screening
New employees are screened thoroughly by New Discovery. In addition, new employees are fingerprinted through New York State Office of Children and Families and screened by New York State Central Clearing Agency.
Licensing & Accreditation

New Discovery is registered with NYS Education Department, incorporated with the consent of the NYS Commissioner of Education and licensed by NY State Office of Children & Family Services, Bureau of Early Childhood.
