About New Discovery

New Discovery provides a warm and secure setting in which young children can flourish with the loving care of dedicated teachers.  Socialization is an important part of the New Discovery program.  There is an emphasis upon sharing, caring, cooperation, manners, and respect for others.  Children follow a daily routine that includes time for free play and for theme based activities fostering learning and skills development. Physical education is incorporated through musical movement indoors, outdoor play on the school playground, and Fitness and Movement sessions with Creative World Learning of New York.  The following pages offer a description of the curriculum and daily routine for the different age groups.

Philosophy

Our goal is to help each child maximize his/her potential in educational and social areas including social relationships, language development, creative expression, learning skills, problem solving, and physical abilities.  We provide care for children from various backgrounds and beliefs and teach respect for all.

Our Staff

The Executive Director and owner since 1983 is on site along with the Business Director and Education Director to ensure the well being and safety of each child in the program.  Teachers hired since 1988 have received the National Credential of Child Development Associate Degree (CDA), a New York State Teaching Degree or a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education.  We are proud of the low staff turnover and many staff members have ten years or more years of employment at New Discovery. Our staff has a reputation for their combination of educational skills, practical experience, and a warm, caring devotion to each child’s growth and development.  Staff members work cooperatively to share new ideas as well as tried and true practices for guiding children and parents through the early childhood years.

STAFF EDUCATION

All classroom staff receive a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years, including required training in First Aid, CPR, and, (effective January 2005) MAT -- Medication Administration Training.  New teachers receive mentoring from an experienced teacher for their first year in the classroom.
